What is Pilates?
Pilates is a whole-body conditioning program developed by Joseph Pilates over a period of 40 years, beginning in the 1920′s. It is a system that educates the body with progressions of exercises designed to strengthen the core musculature as it stretches the body. Pilates teaches the body to move with ease and economy of effort and leads to a lengthened, flexible, stronger, and more evenly developed physique. The complete Pilates repertoire includes both mat and equipment work. The equipment uses spring-based resistance to strengthen and tone muscles improving posture and joint alignment. The focus on breath and other Pilates principles such as centering, concentration, flowing motion and rhythm, are integral in effective Pilates practice leading to physical transformation.
When will I start to see and feel the benefits of Pilates?
Many clients notice the benefits sooner than they expected though every body is unique. Joseph Pilates claimed that “In 10 sessions you’ll feel the difference, in 20 you’ll see the difference, and in 30 you’ll have a new body.”
It is recommended to do Pilates 2-3 times per week. A consistent practice will greatly determine how quickly you will notice positive changes in your body.
Do men do Pilates?
Yes.
Joseph Pilates, himself, was a martial artist, boxing instructor, circus performer and body builder. He developed this method to be a challenging, total body program for men and in 1925, was even asked by the German government to train the New German Army. It usually only takes a few sessions for men to realize that Pilates can be the most challenging, yet stress-relieving, workout that they have attempted and that they can see and feel the benefits. Advanced Pilates can be challenging for even the fittest male athlete.
Will Pilates improve my golf game?
Golfers and other athletes are starting to recognize the benefits of Pilates. A great golf swing involves core strength, spinal flexibility, and proper sequencing of muscles. Pilates addresses all of these areas of sports conditioning as well as reducing back aches.
Will Pilates help me lose weight?
Pilates includes resistance-based exercises and your body will burn calories. It only becomes more of a cardio workout as you become more advanced. An effective weight-loss plan includes resistance-based exercises, cardio exercise and proper nutrition.
Will Pilates flatten and tone my stomach?
Yes. Increasing abdominal strength and improving posture leads to a slimmer waist.
I am not very flexible or coordinated, can I still do Pilates?
Absolutely. Pilates will improve your flexibility and coordination and because the programs are personalized, you can start at any fitness level.
Can I do Pilates if I have an existing injury?
Pilates focuses on strengthening and lengthening the body while correcting alignment and posture. Correcting muscular imbalances and movement patterns help during the recovery process of an injury. Your Pilates program will include exercises that both benefit the injured site and exercise the rest of the body. We recommend that you obtain medical clearance before starting any exercise program.
How is Pilates different from yoga?
Both forms of exercise address the relationship between mind, body, spirit, and breath. However, the philosophies are different.
Yoga, a holistic, spiritual discipline, originated from India and is based on the Eastern idea of moving energy through the body. Physical tension hinders the flow. The physical postures and meditation encourage the energy to flow more freely.
Pilates was developed by man named Joseph Pilates. Pilates is a mindful movement program which can be practiced on a mat or on specific Pilates equipment to gain flexibility, build strength and find coordination.
“Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.” –Joseph Pilates
Will Pilates help me to strengthen my bones and improve bone density?
Because most of the studio equipment is spring loaded, muscles contracting against that resistance create tension on the muscle tendons which in turn stimulate the bone. This pulling action on the bone helps build bone density and our standing work will improve balance and co-ordination to reduce the likelihood of falls.
How do I know if my Pilates teacher is sufficiently qualified?
Like dance or martial arts, Pilates requires extensive specialized training, personal practice, and supervised teacher training. You cannot learn to teach Pilates in a short course of a few days or a few weeks regardless of the background and existing qualifications of the participant.
Your Pilates teacher should have completed a comprehensive program of at least 450 hours and be certified by an independent body such as The Pilates Method Alliance.
What sets Fletcher Pilates apart from other methods of Pilates?
Fletcher Pilates has a professional and rigorous teacher-training program. Qualified Fletcher Pilates Teachers not only teach the original repertoire of Joseph Pilates, but also the work of Master Pilates Teacher Ron Fletcher who has progressed the work to include the innovative techniques of Fletcher Barrework, Fletcher Floorwork®, Fletcher Towelwork®, and Spine Corrector work with the use of Fletcher Percussive Breath®.
Fletcher Barrework is Pilates performed in a standing position and, therefore, conditions the lower body. Fletcher Floorwork® incorporates a greater range of spinal mechanics than the original Pilates matwork creating a more comprehensive movement experience. Fletcher Towelwork® takes Pilates principles into vertical upright movement to improve posture and shoulder stability, and tone and strengthen the upper body and back.
